The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and vacation is right around the corner. Summer has finally arrived! It’s the season jam-packed with recreational activities. It may be difficult to keep up with your dental health amidst all the fun, but remember, we only get one set of teeth in our lives—we must do our best to protect them. Read along for a few summer oral health tips to prevent dental emergencies.

Practice Pool Safety

Going for a swim at the pool is how most people like to spend their summer days, cooling down in the blazing sun. But did you know that swimming pool accidents are one of the main reasons for dental emergencies during the warmer months? It’s common for people to hit concrete ledges of the pool, breaking or loosening their teeth. Running on the slippery pool decks or diving into shallow water are other reasons for mouth injuries. To protect your smile, read up on pool safety and follow safe practices. When you’re by the pool, make sure you walk (never run!), and avoid jumping in the water feet first.

Stay Hydrated

While relaxing on the shore of a tropical beach, it may be tempting to reach for a sweet drink to cool down. Cocktail drinks, wine, beer, and soda might all sound refreshing, but they’re extremely acidic and can harm your teeth. Overconsumption can damage your tooth enamel and cause dental decay. Instead of acidic or sugary beverages, opt for water. It’s the best drink for your body! It helps keep your mouth clean by washing away bacteria, neutralizing acid, and stimulating healthy saliva production.

Pack Healthy Snacks

Road trips usually calls for more snacking, so to protect your smile, limit sugary treats like candy, cookies, soda, and sports drinks. Alternatively, foods like baby carrots, celery, apple slices, cheese, and nuts are all nutritious snacks that are not only good for your body, but your teeth as well! They’re healthy, delicious, and will keep your mouth and belly happy.

Establish a Good Oral Hygiene Routine

Now that everyone has a more lax schedule, it’s easy to fall out of routine. Summer vacation may be the perfect time for breaks, but not from your dental care. It’s important to establish a good oral hygiene regimen that fits into your hectic summer schedule. Brushing your teeth twice and flossing daily is essential year-round. Don’t forget to pack a toothbrush, floss, and fluoride toothpaste for your vacation so you can keep up with your routine.

Your oral health doesn’t have to suffer at the expense of an exciting vacation. Practicing these tips will help keep your smile healthy and safe so you can enjoy it for many summers to come.
