3 Easy Ways to Maintain a Healthy Smile in 2021

We’ve finally reached the beginning of a new year, which means it’s the perfect time to evaluate your health and figure out what you can do better in 2021. Many New Year’s resolutions will likely include things like “exercise more” or “save more money,” but why not add improving your dental health to your personal list? In addition to scheduling a checkup and cleaning with your dentist, here are three easy things you can do to maintain a healthy smile in 2021 and beyond.

1. Daily Brushing and Flossing

The American Dental Association suggests brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes at a time and flossing every evening. However, studies show that the average American only brushes for 45 seconds at a time, and only 30% of Americans floss daily!

Brushing removes food particles from your teeth, and flossing clears them away from between your teeth. If you don’t clean your pearly whites often enough, the food debris could linger and attract bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. Getting into the habit of daily brushing and flossing is a great way to start the new year off right.

2. An Improved Diet

Eating healthier as one of your New Year’s resolutions will benefit more than just your waistline. Frequently consuming soda, candy, and other sugary items greatly increases your risk of tooth decay. If you have an insatiable sweet tooth, try chewing a piece of sugar-free gum instead. It can satisfy your craving while also reducing your chance of getting cavities.

3. Quitting Tobacco Products

Smoking (or chewing) tobacco has been linked to a doubled or even tripled risk of gum disease and tooth loss. Why? Nicotine restricts the flow of blood and vital nutrients to the gums. It also makes it harder for your mouth to heal from infections like gum disease, making you more likely to lose teeth. Choosing to kick a tobacco habit is one of the best decisions you could make for your oral and overall health. If you need help quitting, your dentist can provide you with resources.

This new year, resolve to do something that benefits your smile. These three simple New Year’s resolutions can open a lot of doors for you in 2021 and make it a year to remember!
